Lori Holland is a licensed patent attorney who focuses on complex intellectual property litigation, including the representation of companies in patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition, and trade secret litigation.

Lori also counsels clients on various transactional matters, including software/technology licensing and transfer agreements, joint development agreements, open source licensing compliance, university collaborations, IP due diligence, and opinions regarding patent validity and infringement.  In addition, Lori has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the fields of software, digital and analog circuit technology, communication and network systems, and semiconductor fabrication.

Prior to joining Holland Law, Lori served as in-house counsel at Adobe Systems Inc. and Electronics for Imaging, and was a law clerk to the Hon. Saundra Brown Armstrong in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.  She also had previous outside counsel positions at O’Melveny & Myers LLP and Keller, Sloan, Roman & Holland, LLP.

Before becoming an attorney, Lori was a design engineer with Honeywell.  Lori applies her background as an engineer to understanding and resolving the unique legal matters specific to highly technical products and services.

Notable Engagements

  • Successfully defended audio cable manufacturer in patent infringement case brought by largest audio component competitor. Result: obtained summary judgment of non-infringement (upheld by the Federal Circuit).
  • Counseled major clothing retailer on numerous patent, trademark, and trade dress issues, including evaluation of company’s affirmative claims against third parties, and claims by third parties against company.
  • Represented top international automaker in trademark infringement action against large importer and seller of illegal gray market automobile parts. Result: favorable settlement and an agreement to fully cease infringing sales.
  • Successfully defended leading social media company against patent infringement action brought by a non-practicing patent assertion entity. Result: full dismissal of all claims.
  • Successfully defended a major consumer products company against claims of patent infringement. Result: very favorable settlement after winning several key pre-trial motions invalidating opponents’ patents and preventing opposing experts from testifying at trial.
  • Defended leading designer and manufacturer of large format lithium-ion rechargeable batteries from claims of patent infringement by a major U.S. university. Result: advantageous business settlement after obtaining overwhelmingly favorable claim construction.
  • Represented a semiconductor chip manufacturer in patent infringement lawsuits involving semiconductor technology related to programmable logic devices.
  • Defended an international biotechnology company in a patent infringement action involving seven patents pertaining to the synthesis and purification of DNA/RNA.
